Our short film demonstrates continuity editing pretty well as you could see consistency pretty much throughout. I think the most consistent part of our short film is where it fades to a mid shot of the actor picking up a phone then after that cuts to a long shot of him walking up to the building and then cuts to a match on action which i thought was done really well. In continuity editing, techniques such as 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action are used to ensure that it is consistent throughout.
To ensure continuity within the short film we made sure that all the shots were in chronological order and each one flowed onto the next. We have included all of the techniques in the short film but did come up with a problem when in editing which was that the final scene that we originally did didn't follow the 180 degree rule so we had to edit it again to make sure that it did fit in. We have also included some transitions and effects into our short film just to help that continuity throughout and it links hopefully to our genre of action/comedy. A few of the shots we used like shot reverse shot were to show the audience the space and how the scene is composed.
We have demonstrated match on action when the actor walks through the door and we see him start to open it from one side then appear on the other side as the door is closing. By using this really good technique we can make it look like the actor has walked through the door but in fact we just captured it from both sides, so they just open the door from one side and then you film from the other side and see the door close and when you put it together it looks continuous. It also helps the viewer understand what is going on in the film.
We have also used the 180 degree rule in our short film to make sure the viewer is orientated in the piece. It makes sure that the audience always can read the storyline and makes it easier to follow. This is shown in the first scene when some dialogue is spoken.
The shot reverse shot is another editing technique which is used in the final scene when the actress speaks and the actors are standing there. This shows the actors first then the actress speaking then the actors this shows the reaction on the actors face. We also included over the shoulder shots in our piece as it helps the audience to place the character within the setting and it is an action that is really noticeable but it is effective.
In this short film we have used a few different transitions like; fade to black and fade. These are good as they show the transition from scene to scene and can be very effective. The editing software that we used was very good even though it was just iMovie on the Mac, i enjoyed using it and have learnt how to do a lot on there, perhaps in the next one we will use better editing software.
I think our group worked average together as there were some issues over who was going to do what bit but it all got resolved pretty quickly. If we had to do this piece again there is definitely things i would improve like; making sure we got the 180 degree rule right, making sure the camera is steady all the time, give more time on editing, try and film piece all in one go instead of little scenes bit by bit. I think we could improve on our planning a bit better as we were a little confused at times into what we were doing but i think it will be all sorted out in time for the next time and we will be a bit more organised.
