Analysis of a Previous Student Film Opening "Solitude by One Bad Apple Productions"

These opening titles seem to have an open narrative and this clearly shows that it is an opening to a film but the genre doesn't seem to be very clear which I guess can be good as it keeps the audience asking questions about what the genre could be. I think that the genre of these opening titles could be a thriller or horror, I think this is indicated when the boy picks up the phone and starts talking down it and no one responds and therefore it is quite creepy/scary in a sense. You can also assume it is these genres because from audience expectations, you would expect to see some sort of weapon used in a horror and in this he picks up a baseball bat which can be used as a weapon. Another thing you would expect in those genres is some sort of creepy/eerie music and through the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound I feel that they have implemented this really nicely into their piece.

However, I do have some concerns with this piece as there are quite a few continuity errors present. The first being when in the first scene the windscreen wipers are half way up the car then in the next scene they are down, this is very easy to spot I feel and although they tried to make it seem like something bad had gone on they could have seen that error in editing. The next error is when the girl in the car is smiling in the car, this could have been quickly resolved by retaking the shot and no letting her smile. The last error I saw was after the boy picked up the baseball bat off of the floor in the apparent "dead" girls hand, she seems to move her hand out of the scene which indicates to me that she wasn't dead but I think that this was not done on purpose and could have once again been really easily corrected by the director putting his foot down and saying we need to retake that shot. The last thing I think that could have been done to make it feel a little bit more like a thriller/horror film opening is to change their institutional logo and colour scheme to fit with the feeling of scariness and fear.
