G321 - Opening Title Analysis - My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

The opening titles of the film My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) gives us quite a big indication into what is to come up in the film ahead.

Genre: From watching the opening titles of the clip, I could tell what the genre of the film would be which is a romantic-comedy (rom-com) which is a hybrid genre. The reason why I thought it was a rom-com hybrid genre is because there is a wedding and the colour pink was used everywhere which normally makes it a romantic film, then the song which they sung was funny so therefore I thought that bit was comedy hence the decision I made of rom-com.

Narrative: The narrative of the opening titles was quite easy to follow as it gives quite a few hints about the story of the film, for example the theme of a wedding, someone getting married and the wedding doesn't go to plan because the bride caught her own bouquet which connotes something going wrong in the film.

Characters: In terms of characters it is pretty clear what is going to happen and who will be in it as win the opening titles we see a bride and three bridesmaids and if you have a bride you tend to have a groom so I'm assuming there will be a groom in there somewhere.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere within the opening titles is happy/funny as it looks like the bride and bridesmaids are having a good time and seem to look happy and it isn't modern looking.

Themes: I think the themes in this opening titles sequence are a cheesy comedy, some iconography and a wedding because as said before the song makes it a cheesy comedy and they are in dresses fit for a wedding hence the selection of wedding as a theme.

Setting: The whole setting of this film that I have picked up from the opening titles is a wedding but this opening titles was made in a studio as you can see from the pink background.

Sound: The non-diegetic music that was used in the opening titles was a happy song and was sung by Dusty Springfield and was called Wishin' and Hopin'. In my opinion I think it is an annoying yet catchy song which gets in your head which I suppose is what they were going for with this song choice as it makes you think about the film and you could word of mouth it onto your friends then they watch it and so on, they used this song in a clever way. This is a retro song so it isn't new it is old fashioned and there are references to love making it a rom-com.

Titles: The titles in this opening titles sequence are calligraphic titles which could connote a wedding invitation, the titles are in yellow which could connote happiness. From the titles I saw that a quite famous actress called  Julia Roberts was in the film.
